Whatever happened to answering the phone?

We’ve all been there before:

You call one of your suppliers because you need something.

The phone rings and then you get the voice system choice menu.

Thank you for calling. Please listen to the following to ensure we direct your call to the appropriate voice mailbox:

You may enter the extension of the person you are trying to reach at any time. Otherwise:

  • Press 1: If you want sales. [They’ll get back soon, maybe.]
  • Press 2: If you want technical assistance. [They’ll get back within a week, we promise.]
  • Press 3: If you are not sure who you should talk to. [This goes to our general voicemail, eventually someone may get back to you, but you’ll probably have to call again.]
  • Press 0: If it makes you feel better. [This still goes to our general voicemail.]

So, you leave a message and then when you don’t get a response, you leave another message and eventually you may get someone.

In the meantime you can’t answer your customer’s question because you can’t get the information from your supplier.

Your customer is getting angry and may end up going somewhere else, because they don’t have time to wait for your supplier.
