Viton® (trademarked by Dupont) is a class of fluoropolymer elastomer (synthetic rubber) commonly used in O-rings and other molded or extruded goods. It is well known for its excellent heat resistance, making service temperatures over 150° Celsius possible.

Viton is often used because of its excellent chemical resistance. The performance of fluoroelastomers in aggressive chemicals depends on the grade of the elastomer.

Viton’s chemical resistance is summarized below.

Good Resistance

  • Hydrocarbons
  • Many aggressive chemicals
  • Diluted acids
  • Weak alkalis
  • Mineral oils
  • Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons
  • Chlorinated hydrocarbons

Poor Resistance

  • Ketones
  • Acetone
  • Esters

There are currently several grades of Viton that ASEPCO uses for its diaphragms:

  • Viton A has good chemical resistance, but should not be used with most Ketones and Esters. It does not perform well in constant steam applications.
  • Steam-grade Viton A has nearly the same chemical resistance as Viton A, but it is several times more resistant to steam. This is the Viton grade that ASEPCO customers most commonly request.
  • Viton GF is more chemically resistant than Viton A, and offers excellent steam resistance, too. However, it should not be used with many Ketones and Esters.
  • Viton ETP is the most chemically resistant Viton offering the greatest steam resistance and can be used with some Ketones and Esters. However, the cost of the grade of Viton is quite high and to date, ASEPCO has not made diaphragms with this material.

  • All diaphragms meet USP VI standards and are FDA CFR 177.2600 compliant
  • Valve assembles with hygienic clamp and no tools
  • Three seals formed with valve body
  • Behind-the-seat flow path
  • Meets the standards for quality, purity, lack of toxicity, strength, and consistency
  • Suitable for biomedical/pharma applications
  • Diaphragm can be changed extremely quickly with little training
  • No need for re-torquing after use
  • Minimizes contamination and dead legs
  • Allows complete flushing of the valve chamber
ASEPCO provides diaphragms created with a number of different materials. The materials vary with respect to heat-resistance, chemical-resistance, and durability. The table below shows basic compatibility information. Please do not use this information as your sole method for determining whether an elastomer is right for your specific process. Before using any elastomer in a process you should verify its compatibility with an elastomer expert.
