The Word Engineer ...
The word "Engineer" comes from the Latin word ingenium meaning "talent, genius, cleverness, or native ability".

The first engineers, not "Professional Engineers" (which is what what engineers are now known as), were people who designed weapons of war.

The term Engineer, up until around the late 1700's, was synonymous with Military Engineer.

Since the late 1800's, the proverbial "Engineer" has been known as a Professional Engineer.
